Specialist architects will prepare concept and design work for a brand new community theatre and arts centre serving Teignmouth.
Architects LHC have been appointed by Teignbridge District Council in a major step forwards towards replacing the ageing but popular Carlton Theatre on Teignmouth sea front.
Live performances will continue in a new theatre, a key ingredient of the regeneration project, with other options also being considered for inclusion in the landmark redevelopment.
These include the possibility of a 'destination' restaurant, a coffee bar, multi-purpose community rooms and space for art exhibitions.
Cllr Alan Connett, Teignbridge District Council: "The new facility really will be a landmark development for Teignmouth, providing a replacement theatre and ensuring that there is space to provide many of the things that the public have asked for."
Discussions have also been started with Devon County Council on the possibility of moving Teignmouth Library from its current site to the new centre on the Den, when it is built.
Cllr Alan Connett, leader of Teignbridge District Council, said: "The new facility really will be a landmark development for Teignmouth, providing a replacement theatre and ensuring that there is space to provide many of the things that the public have asked for. It is clear that everybody involved values the community use of the building.
"The architects we have appointed have a wealth of experience designing top-quality buildings, including the major refurbishment of the Northcott Theatre in Exeter and the Barbican Theatre in Plymouth."
The redevelopment project follows a public consultation last October, in which almost 500 people gave their views and expressed overwhelming support for upgrading the facility.
This led to ongoing discussions with current leaseholders the Teignmouth Players, the local Bowls Club and other stakeholders and community groups about their views for an improved community building.
Teignbridge Council also arranged a trip to the Flavel Centre in Dartmouth for a delegation of interested parties, providing an opportunity to view a modern community arts centre and seek inspiration.
Other facilities which have been looked at during the process include the Ivybridge Community Centre and the Brewhouse Theatre and Arts Centre in Taunton.
Once the concepts and designs have been prepared they will go on to be used as part of a 'feasibility study', which will look carefully at the cost of construction and the best use of space in the new building.
Roger Smith, of the Teignmouth Players, said: "The Teignmouth Players are totally behind this wonderful opportunity to keep live theatre in the town and the chance to have a landmark building that will not only enhance the Den area but will also provide a home for many others from the Arts and other organisations."
